The Green Party of the United States was recognized by the FEC in 2001 as a national party after U.S. Greens spent the 1980s and 1990s building on the local and state level. As of February 15, 2024, at least 144 Greens in 20 states held elected office across the nation.
The Green Party of the United States has 44 affiliated state party members, plus the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands, and five organized caucuses. Different states have varying laws and party rules that define party membership.
In the 31 states (+ DC) that have partisan registration, 22 (+ DC) allow for, and report, Green Party registration numbers. As of July 2025, there were 261,091 registered Greens in 24 States and the District of Columbia, an increase of 5% since November 2024. Many thousands more identify themselves as Green in states that don’t have voter registration by party membership.
As of June 2025, the Green Party had ballot lines in 19 states for the 2026 General Election, including the District of Columbia. More states are in the process of seeking ballot lines through petition drives. In the 2016 general election, the Green Party had ballot lines in 44 states plus DC. Ballot access in 2020 was greatly impacted by COVID restrictions and partisan actions raising ballot access requirements for third parties.
International:
Green Party members attended the Global Greens Congress Korea 2023 and provided input on the Global Greens' Demand Statement for COP28, the UN Climate Change Conference held in United Arab Emirates in Nov/Dec 2023, to phase out all fossil fuels without delay.

The Four Pillars of the Green Party of the United States
Peace
Our country's long wars and worldwide military presence are immoral and unsustainable. Our military budget must be cut dramatically.
Ecology
The human cost of climate change is too high. We need to get off fossil fuels and on to renewable energy.
Social Justice
Falling wages and rising bills are hitting most of us, and the most vulnerable are hit the hardest. We demand a living wage and a real safety net.
Democracy
We demand public financing of elections, open debates, and more representative voting systems.
