Johnson County Green Party Business Meeting and Films
February 21st, 2009
Iowa City Public Library, Room E
After announcements, there were three reports. Gail Ardery reviewed FAIR!'s budget teach-in; Libris Fidelis" reported from the Citizens for Economic Human Rights, and Holly Hart reported from the national Green Party Steering Committee strategic planning session.
We then discussed news; plans for upcoming events; and other issues.
3:15 - 4:00 p.m.
Two short documentaries were shown:
HALO AT PALO
GREEN PEACE NEVADA NUCLEAR ACTION
Halo at Palo was filmed right here in Iowa in the Cedar River Valley Watershed. It focuses on a local concerned citizen's righteous indignation at the nuclear power plant at Palo, just thirty miles downwind from Iowa City, a very intimate, empowering powerful and visionary portrait and statement of what we need to do right here in River City (Iowa City and Cedar Rapids), right here in our own backyard.
Green Peace Nevada Nuclear Test Site Back Country Action This is a VERY RARE JEWEL of the Anti-nuclear Movement literally handed off at midnight right during a night vigil action at Nevada Nuclear Test Site, by a NASA Engineer who worked on the Apollo Mission. This film was secreted away and this is the FIRST SHOWING EVER in Iowa, a rare gift and film.
Discussion followed the movies. Future events were announced, including a benefit dinner to support the University of Iowa Anti-War Committee bus trip to DC for jobs, justice & peace Feb. 25, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Red Avocado. Also there will be an Environmental Film Festival on future Sundays.
The meeting was adjourned after 4:00 p. m.
