Johnson County Green Party Business Meeting
1-11-05, 7:00 p.m.

Pizza on Dubuque

Due to members being away or busy during the break and holidays, we decided to hold the type of meeting we'd initially planned for this month in February.

I. the Bottle Bill:

Black Hawk County and other Green chapters are taking up this issue: Fareway and some other grocery chains have tried to refuse accepting cans and bottles. The Iowa Attorney General has notified Fareway stores in some cities that they must continue to accept them. A member will get a list of grocery stores in this area, members will divide up the list and make calls to find out what local stores are planing to do.

II. Issues of concern:

A former school board member has alerted us about a
situation involving developers and the school district. More public light needs to be shed on these issues. We will invite Dave Franker to speak more about this at our next meeting.

III. Citizens for Public Power is starting a new phase of their campaign to pass a referendum for Iowa City to do a feasibility study on adopting a municipal utility. Members unanimously approved the Johnson County Green Party's endorsement of this project.

The possibility of letting Citizens for Public Power use our mailing list for a mass mailing was raised. Some wondered if members would be comfortable with this. The co-chair will send a question to the Johnson County Green Party listserv and ask for input.

IV. Libertarians/joint meeting:

Thom Hartmann (progressive writer and radio show host) will be in Cedar Rapids on April 2. The Libertarians would like the Iowa Green Party to help out with publicity and logistics, mostly in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. The event would include join a strategy/planning session to discuss policy areas Greens and Libertarians might effectively lobby on together (ballot status/ partisan registration/electoral reform; Patriot Act; corporate charters).

V. Materials/upcoming event:

FAIR! is holding an event at The Mill where we can have some of our literature available. We need to update our local brochure; we have several other brochures and flyers that will work, if we can't get that done by Sunday.

VI. We decided to hold Johnson County Green Party meetings on the first Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will be February 1st at 7 p.m, at Pizza on Dubuque. We will send out more advance notice and call on new members and Campus Greens. We will have on hand a list of county and city elected offices, boards and commissions, and will discuss where there are vacancies and upcoming races members may wish to apply or run for.

NEXT MEETING:
Tuesday, February 1st, 2005
7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
Pizza on Dubuque
