Johnson County Green Party Business Meeting Minutes
Saturday, July 21st, 2007
3:00 - 3:30 p.m.
Iowa City Public Library, Room D
Present: Ron Kinum, Holly Hart, Gail Ardery, David Dooernen; guests from Cedar Rapids or other areas included Wendy Barth, Tom Cobb, Emily Carson.
1) Review of possible upcoming events.
Cherry Muhanji is interested in presenting a reading. Early fall seems like a good time.
Larry Orr has given us a few videos that would be of interest (especially perhaps to people who have lived in the area for awhile). John Shumaker has offered to come down to facilitate discussions after other films similar to the one seen last month.
We missed the July 19th "Dirty Coal Plant" event, where we had been offered a table space by New Pi Co-op. Too many of our active members were either swamped with work or in transit/away. Nevertheless, it was good to be included in the list of invitees. We would like someone to help out as Events Coordinator.
2) Review of Just-Finished Secretary of State settlement which will allow third party members to register party affiliation. More information will be forthcoming, as soon as we get the official forms. We hope these will appear sometime this coming week. Forms for both the Green and Libertarian Parties will be posted on each others' websites. This opportunity is available for other third parties, as well. More petitioning at the pedestrian mall - stay tuned....!
3) Gail Ardery relayed some of the responses to various environmental questions that had been sent to city councillors Regenia Bailey and Amy Correia. Information provided by Regenia:
The Iowa City recycling coordinator is John Jordan. The city must recycle all compact flourescents. Citizens are exempt, but encouraged to do so, as best practice, through the city. Members expressed concern/annoyance with the inconvenience of having to cart things to the landfill (not so easy for some of us). There was also concern about the disposals of used needles; elderly or ill diabetics may have difficulty in getting to the landfill.
Fuel used in city vehicles: 10% bio-diesel blend for all transit busses; 5% for all other diesel-powered city vehicles. There is no storage capacity for E85.
The meeting was followed by a showing of "An Unreasonable Man," a film documentary about Ralph Nader. There have been some requests from people who weren't able to attend, so it might be worth scheduling another showing. The DVD set includes several short features on things like "Why Third Parties Are Needed," which might also be an interesting showing.
In the meantime, also check out the videos and reports from the Green Party-US national meeting. Thanks to Ron Kinum, who stepped in as delegate, attended several workshops and took extensive notes. There are also videos of some of the presentations (International; Presidential candidates forum, etc).

2) PeaceFest, Saturday, afternoon September 23rd, College Green Park. We will have a table and will put out a call for volunteers to help staff it. Bill Boos
is willing to commit a couple hours to this.
3) University of Iowa Sustainable Energy Expo, Wednesday, September. 27th, Sheraton, Old
Capitol Mall, University of Iowa Engineering Building and Pentacrest; visit by Ted Glick, National Co-ordinator of the Climate Crisis Coalition.
Johnson County Greens are listed as one of the participating organizations, and we are asked to provide volunteers to staff the Climate Crisis Coalition table.
Along with bringing Ted Glick, Johnson County Greens will be offering two presentations.
* Bev Hannon, former state senator active in I-RENEW, will present a talk on practical ways in which individuals can live a sustainable lifestyle. She will be introduced by one of her former University of Iowa professors, Florence Boos.
- Florence will send a biographical statement about Bev Hannon to Holly to pass along to the Energy Expo planners.
* Wendy Barth, Iowa Green Party co-chair and gubernatorial candidate, will moderate a discussion following a screening of "The End of Suburbia."

Ted Glick will be one of the guests on WSUI's "Talk of Iowa" at 10:00 a. m. Wednesday, September 27th. Listeners can tune in to WSUI, AM 910, or http://wsui.uiowa.edu to listen and call in with questions.
.
Ted will take part in a panel discussion including other Energy Expo guests and planners, probably in the early afternoon.
At 5:00 p.m., Ted and Philippe Cousteau will be the speakers for a Global Warming rally on the Pentacrest, sponsored by the University of Iowa Student Government and preceded by Euforchestra.

4) Ted will be arriving in Iowa City on Tuesday, September 26th in the early afternoon. Members plan to arrange a talk, classroom visit or other activity. The University of Iowa is providing lodging, transportation and meals, and offers an honorarium/expense allotment which will cover plane fare. Members will offer funds to cover local transportation and additional meals.
-- Members are looking into a venue for a talk by Ted Glick. Gail will check out
the public library. [Unfortunately, the public library is not
available; other options, including Wesley House or a room at the IMU are being sought.]
-- Ted's biographical statement and photos have been sent to the Energy Expo planners.
Johnson County Green Party members will also put out publicity.
Many thanks to Florence Boos and her colleague for updating the Iowa Green Party and Johnson County Green Party websites.
Next meeting - To be announced, pending members' ability to find a workable meeting time.
