Johnson County
Green Party Business Meeting
Wednesday, June 9, 2004
7:00 p.m.
Uptown Bill's Small Mall
Attendance:
Peter Harty, Kevin Owens, Holly Hart, Florence Boos
Facilitator:
Peter Harty
We commented
on the good article by Jim Walters in today's "Press-Citizen."
We noted that a recent issue of the University of Iowa Spectator had
featureed recent UI Campus Greens co-chair Ethan Grundberg.
I. Leafletting
-
Peter noted that MoveOn.org offers leaflets designed for passing out outside
of theatres showing the eco-disaster movie "The Day After Tomorrow."
We talked of preparing other leaflets presenting issues, positions, and
party information.
---
We agreed that we will look into getting the MoveOn.org leaflets. We also
agreed to create leaflets or brochures on various topics, update our local
party brochures, and update the generic Iowa Green Party brochure on file
at Zephyrs.
II. Tabling
Holly will renew our permit.
We plan to set up a table and/or petition downtown on the Pedestrian Mall
Friday evenings and Saturday and Sunday afternoons, weather permitting.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!! ----- Collect signatures to get Greens on the Iowa
and
Johnson County ballot for the November general election:
U. S. President: David Cobb
U. S. Senate: Daryl Northrop
Johnson County Board of Supervisors: Kevin Owens
If you'd like to help out:
Friday evenings, contact Peter Harty at 620-4322.
Saturdays, contact Bill Boos at 338-4383.
On Sundays (and/or Friday evenings and Saturdays), if the weather is nice,
just
stop down at the ped. mall and look for our table or petitioners. You
can
also get a petition to take to friends, family, campus, etc.
III. Kevin Owens is our candidate for the Johnson County Board of Supervisors
race.
He has talked with suportive advisors, and will be attending the Board
of Supervisors meetings. We discussed starting campaign meetings and a
mailing; the time will be announced, but it will probably be in early
July.
IV. Other elections - Peter Harty will look into the possibility of running
for the
Soil and Water Commission.
VI. Florence
Boos and Jim Walters have been invited to speak at Linn
County Green Party meetings; Florence suggested that in turn we might
invite someone from the Linn County Green Party to speak here, and we
spoke of asking Dr. Bob Schultes to speak on health care; Brad Wilson
on agricultural issues; and David Larson (Waterloo), on the role of media
in the coming election.
VII. PATV - Kevin Owens will attend a training session for this on July
11th; he suggested running some of the Democracy University programs.
VIII.
Convention in Milwaukee--
We
discussed plans and expectations for the Green Party convention to be
held in Milwaukee. Holly will go early, and Kevin, Florence and Peter
agreed to meet at Florence's house at 2 p. m. Friday June 25th. Peter
is driving his van, and anyone who wishes to attend is welcome to join
us.
We adjourned
about 8:20 p. m.
Submitted,
